Cowboy boots have been around since around the 16th century. Cowboys realized that one of the toughest materials out there was cowhide and utilized that material to make strong and durable boots that could deal with the terrain that they would face daily. Although the cowhide boots were good, they did not have the fashion features to become popular as a boot to wear apart from when riding. Like wise the traditional pointy toe has been customized so that it is slightly more rounded, again to make it more comfortable for walking.

The tall leather shaft was a functional feature and something that modern snake cowboy boots still tend to possess. This used to be to help support the ankle and calf area, but also because traditional boots did not use laces. Nowadays, many manufacturers choose to go with the same setup, without any laces, which gives them a much more characteristic look about them.

As the popularity for snake cowboy boots increased, so did the amount of manufacturers. Nowadays, people can obtain both functional and fashionable snake cowboy boots for a reasonable price from a range of manufacturers.
